A Toast to London's Finest
London is a city that never sleeps, and its cocktail scene is no exception. With so many amazing bars and talented mixologists, it's easy to find a drink that suits your taste. In this article, I'll be sharing some of my favorite cocktail bars in London, along with their signature drinks, unique features, and overall atmosphere. So, grab your friends, and let's toast to a night out in this beautiful city!
The Experimental Cocktail Club
Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Experimental Cocktail Club is a hidden gem that you won't want to miss. From its unassuming exterior, you'd never guess that it houses some of the most innovative and creative cocktails in the city. The menu is ever-changing, but I highly recommend trying their signature drink, the "Old Cuban" – a delicious blend of rum, lime, mint, and champagne.
What sets this bar apart from the rest is its intimate atmosphere. The dimly-lit space is filled with plush armchairs and vintage furniture, making it the perfect spot for a romantic date or a cozy catch-up with friends. And with a friendly and knowledgeable staff, you're guaranteed to have a memorable experience.
Mr. Fogg's Residence
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the world of Phileas Fogg at Mr. Fogg's Residence. This Mayfair bar is inspired by the protagonist of Jules Verne's classic novel, "Around the World in 80 Days," and it's filled with unique artifacts and curiosities collected during Fogg's fictional journey. The attention to detail is extraordinary, and you'll feel like you're on an adventure of your own.
But what about the cocktails? The menu is just as impressive as the decor, featuring drinks inspired by different countries and cultures. My personal favorite is the "Maiden Voyage" – a refreshing mix of gin, elderflower, grapefruit, and champagne. The knowledgeable bartenders are more than happy to recommend a drink based on your preferences, so don't be afraid to ask for their expert advice.
Oriole
Nestled in the heart of Smithfield Market, Oriole is a tropical paradise that will transport you to far-off lands. The exotic decor, complete with lush plants and colorful murals, creates an unforgettable experience that's perfect for a night out with friends or a special occasion. And with live jazz and world music performances every night, you'll be swaying to the beat in no time.
As for the cocktails, Oriole's menu is divided into three sections: Old World, New World, and The Orient. Each section features a selection of expertly crafted drinks made with a variety of unique ingredients and flavors. My personal favorite is the "Zanzibar Sour" – a tangy and slightly sweet concoction made with bourbon, tamarind, and pineapple. Trust me, you'll want to try them all!
Swift
If you're looking for a cozy, intimate atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails, look no further than Swift. Located in Soho, this two-story bar offers a different experience on each level. The upstairs area is bright and welcoming, with a marble bar and a menu focused on classic cocktails with a twist. Downstairs, the vibe is darker and more romantic, with a focus on whiskey and live piano music.
One of my favorite drinks at Swift is the "Sgroppino" – a delightful mix of vodka, lemon sorbet, and prosecco. Served in a champagne flute and garnished with a sprig of mint, it's as beautiful as it is delicious. And with a friendly, knowledgeable staff, you'll feel right at home in this Soho hotspot.
Bar Termini
For a taste of Italy in the heart of London, head to Bar Termini. Inspired by Italy's traditional train station bars, this small but charming spot in Soho offers delicious coffee by day and a selection of classic Italian cocktails by night. The intimate atmosphere, complete with marble tabletops and vintage posters, makes you feel like you've been transported to a quaint Italian cafe.
The cocktail menu is concise but well-curated, featuring Italian staples such as the Negroni and the Spritz. My personal favorite is the "Rosato" – a delicate blend of gin, rose petals, and vermouth. Paired with their delicious selection of Italian charcuterie and cheeses, it's the perfect spot for a pre-dinner aperitivo or a nightcap.
Nightjar
Travel back in time to the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s at Nightjar. Located in Shoreditch, this speakeasy-style bar is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, thanks to its incredible cocktails, live jazz music, and vintage atmosphere. The dimly-lit space is filled with plush armchairs, Art Deco accents, and even a hidden door that leads to a secret room – perfect for a rendezvous with friends or a romantic date.
The cocktail menu is extensive, featuring modern twists on classic drinks, as well as inventive new creations. My personal favorite is the "Gatsby Smash" – a refreshing blend of gin, lemon, mint, and elderflower. And with an attentive, knowledgeable staff, you'll feel like a VIP in this glamorous hideaway.
Dandelyan
Located in the chic Mondrian Hotel on the South Bank, Dandelyan offers stunning views of the Thames and a stylish, contemporary atmosphere. The brainchild of renowned mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana, this award-winning bar is known for its innovative and thought-provoking cocktails. The menu is divided into intriguing categories like "Hunter," "Gatherer," and "Shaman," which showcase the unique ingredients and flavors used in each drink.
One of my favorites is the "Concrete Sazerac" – a bold and smoky concoction made with rye whiskey, absinthe, and bitters. And with a knowledgeable and passionate staff, you'll learn something new with every sip. Whether you're a cocktail enthusiast or just looking for a memorable night out, Dandelyan is a must-visit.
The Gibson
Last but certainly not least, The Gibson is a true gem in the heart of London. Located in Old Street, this intimate and atmospheric bar is inspired by the classic Gibson cocktail. The menu features a staggering selection of over 50 unique and beautifully presented drinks, each served in its own distinctive glassware. The attention to detail is truly remarkable, and you'll be blown away by the creativity and craftsmanship.
My personal favorite is the "Electric Lover" – a stunning and colorful concoction made with gin, elderflower, violet, and champagne. And with a friendly, knowledgeable staff, you'll feel like a true cocktail connoisseur. So, raise a glass and toast to a fantastic night out in London's best cocktail bars!
